Week 1 Meeting Tale Notes 1-2

Welcome to the Year 1 – 2 Meeting Tale Notes

Each week (usually), workshop notes will be published on the website. The notes will include some detail on the activities undertaken in the workshop, sometimes images, student writing, home tasks and sometimes pdfs relevant to the workshop. Extra tasks and other suggested activities may also be included.

After some warm up activities and a brief tiger visit, the students looked at the image of a wild tiger. This kick started some discussion, and a list was made of what tigers do and don’t do. Following this activity, we watched a short video on tigers and then worked on creating a ‘Tiger Facts File’.

Next, the story, ‘The Tiger Who Came for Tea’ by Judith Kerr, was read to the class. Some of the following questions were asked and discussed:

  1. How do you think Sophie feels when she sees the tiger at the door?
  2. How would you feel?
  3. Would you let a tiger in?
  4. Who are the main characters in the story?
  5. Tell me what you know about the tiger?
  6. Do you think the tiger is being greedy? How?
  7. What do you think of the tiger’s behaviour?
  8. Is this how a tiger usually behaves?
  9. How should you behave when visiting someone’s home?
  10. What was daddy’s reaction when he came home?
  11. How could daddy have responded when he arrived home? Your Daddy?
  12. Did you like/dislike the story?
  13. What did you like/ dislike about it?

Model Text – The Tiger Who Came for Tea

  1. Here is the audio recording of this term’s writing model, ‘The Tiger Who Came for Tea’. Listen to the audio as many times as you can to internalise the story.

Home Tasks

  1. Complete the ‘Tiger Facts File’ and return to class next week for sharing with the class.
  2. Listen each day to the audio recording ‘The Tiger who Came for Tea’. The challenge is to internalise the story; know it super well.
  3. PDF of the ‘Tiger Fact File
Extra Activit Suggestions:
  1. Make some goodies and have a tea party to re-enact the story.
  2. Create a shopping list of the foods Sophie’s family needed to buy to replace the things that the tiger ate. Have a look at some of the costs.
  3. Tiger stuff: look at food chains for tigers, explore the use of camouflage, create a collage of a jungle scene. Draw a tiger – Art for Kids Hub
