Week 2 Meeting Tale Notes 5-7

Welcome to Week 2 Meeting Tale Notes

The students received their ‘Meeting Tale’ magpie journals today. This journal is a place to store writing ideas, phrases, interesting words and also includes some of the activities we hope to undertake in the workshops.

Today’s main activities evolved around the characters in our meeting tale, ‘Poppy, Waldo and the Giant’.

We looked:

  • at a story map of the model text
  • at some of the words students might not be familiar with
  • discussed some of the interesting word choices in the model text (more to come on this)

Then came some hot seat role playing …

Hot seat activity

We had two marvellous students volunteer to be Poppy and the Giant. Many questions were put to our two visitors, some of these questions are in the students’ Magpie Journals. Here are some of the extra discoveries we made after questioning the following guests:

Poppy

      1. Has also had other strange visitors, such as a possum, who came to collect trash.
      2. Has other activities such as being a terrible dancer and working at a circus.
      3. Her friend Waldo, always pushes her off the playground. Even though he seems to be a bully, Poppy is still friends with Waldo because he believes her.
      4. Her favourite animal at the circus is a camel called Jim. She doesn’t like the other camel, Bob, as he spits at her. He spits so hard that Poppy gets bruises from the projectile spit.
      5. Waldo likes to push poppy off the playground, but she hangs with him because he’s the only person who believes poppy.

Giant

      1. Came from another town where they had more sophisticated plans to get rid of giants.
      2. Has actually been inside Poppy’s home on the day before Christmas. He took gifts from under the tree and also some of granny’s knickers.
      3. He is friends with the other Santa giants.
      4. His favourite thing to do is trample cars.
      5. Ate Jim, the camel from the circus.
      6. He grows little bushes behind his ears.

Home Tasks

  1. Complete the ‘Poppy’s Character Profile’ and ‘The Giant’s Character Profile’ and return to class next week for sharing with the class. (Pages 5 – 8, Magpie Journal)

  3. Continue to listen to the audio recording of this term’s writing model, ‘Poppy, Waldo and the Giant’. Listen to the audio as many times as you can to internalise the story.
